BAY SHORE, N.Y. (AP) - Police in New York are crediting the actions of an officer and a good Samaritan for rescuing an elderly woman who drove her car off of a marina into Long Island’s Great South Bay.

Police in Suffolk County say Officer Nicholas Aspromgos responded to a 911 call at 1:11 p.m. Saturday to find the 97-year-old’s car almost entirely submerged in the water.

They say water was up to the woman’s neck. Her car’s windows were rolled up and the doors locked.

They say Aspromgos shattered the woman’s windows and a good Samaritan helped lift her out of the water and onto a dock.

The Bohemia woman was then taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police didn’t identify the woman.
