ODESSA, Neb. (AP) - An Elm Creek man stabbed nine times on a central Nebraska roadside was still was able to subdue his accused attacker until an Army National Guard sergeant came to his aid.
Johnny Quintana, 38, was stabbed nine times Friday afternoon following an argument with an 18-year-old Ohio man, the Kearney Hub reported (https://bit.ly/1NPQl7f ) Saturday. Sheriff’s officials said the two men were traveling in separate vehicles on a county road in Odessa when they exchanged words, then got out of their vehicles. The Ohio man stabbed Quintana repeatedly with a knife, authorities said.
Army National Guard Sgt. Lucuas Gerdes said he was walking into his furniture store when he saw the vehicles stopped, then heard someone yell, “He’s got a knife!”
Gerdes grabbed a handgun and ran to the scene, where the Ohio man had already been subdued. Gerdes held the man at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived, he said. A U.S. Postal Service employee and another woman treated Quintana’s injuries until paramedics arrived, Gerdes said.
Quintana was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in serious condition late Friday. A family member told the newspaper he had been stabbed in the stomach, chest, face, head and neck.
The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office said the 18-year-old Ohio man was arrested without incident on suspicion of felony first-degree assault and using a weapon to commit a felony. He is being held in the Buffalo County Jail without bond and is expected to be formally charged Monday in Buffalo County Court.
