NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. (AP) - The U.S. Navy’s top enlisted sailor will visit the Great Lakes Naval Station to kick off a project that makes electronic tablets a part of boot camp.

Mike Stevens is Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy. He will join Great Lakes’ commander Rear Adm. Richard Brown on Tuesday to distribute tablets to the Navy’s newest recruits.

The tablets will include recruit-training curriculum, training videos and access to professional websites.

Officials say the tablets employ the same technology many recruits used all through elementary and high school. As a result, they create a “seamless educational transition from civilian to sailor.”

The project is in a pilot phase so authorities can determine how well the tablets can be integrated into the training environment.
