JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A House committee has advanced Gov. Bill Walker’s appointment to the state fish board.

The House Resources Committee on Friday agreed to forward Robert Ruffner’s name to a joint session of the House and Senate for consideration.

The committee heard public testimony and asked Ruffner about his background during the hearing, which took less than an hour.

Ruffner, a Soldotna resident, is executive director of the nonprofit Kenai Watershed Forum but told the committee he is stepping down in June or July, and would enjoy the challenge of learning about more state fisheries.

Walker appointed Ruffner to the seven-member Board of Fisheries in March. His prior pick for the seat, Kasilof resident Roland Maw, withdrew his nomination in February.

If confirmed, Ruffner’s term would start July 1.
