SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - A Sioux City specialty plant that processes ribs and other pre-cooked meats is planning a $9 million expansion that will result in 30 new jobs.
Curly’s Foods, owned by Smithfield Foods, credits a boost in sales and demand for pre-cooked meats at national franchise restaurants for the expansion plans, the Sioux City Journal reported (https://bit.ly/1NPLqDb ) Saturday.
The 13,000-square-foot addition will be added to the south side of the building. It will include additional cooling units, ovens and production space. The project also includes work on an 8,000-square-foot portion of the plant that was built several years ago but not used to full capacity.
The City Council is slated on Monday to approve a state tax incentive application for Smithfield Foods for the project.
Under the Iowa Economic Development Authority’s High Quality Job Creation Program, the company would receive an estimated $180,000 in investment tax credits and another $180,000 in refunds of sales and use tax on construction materials.
Of the $9 million plan, $6 million will be allocated toward building improvements and $3 million will be invested in new machinery and equipment.
Curly’s Foods employs 630 people at its plant in the Yards Business Park near Interstate 29 and U.S. Highway 75.
