PATRICK, S.C. (AP) - Officials say a man and a 3-year-old boy drowned when their boat capsized while they were fishing in a rural pond in Chesterfield County.

The Richmond County, N.C., Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1yLBi5F) that Chesterfield County Coroner Kip Kiser confirmed that 27-year-old Teddy Gainey and the young boy died in a private pond near Patrick. The drowning was reported around 2 p.m. Friday.

Robert McCullough with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources said three people were in the boat, and that an unidentified 21-year-old man grabbed the boy and brought him to shore, where emergency personnel evaluated him before taking him to a nearby hospital, where he died despite attempts to resuscitate him.

Chesterfield County Sheriff Jay Brooks said none of the three were wearing life vests.
