NEW ALBANY, Miss. (AP) - Legislation to allow the city-owned New Albany Gas System to expand its service area has been signed by Gov. Phil Bryant.

Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley says in a new release that parts of Union and Marshall counties do not have natural gas now. He says legislative approval was required before the city could provide service five miles outside its borders and to expand the service area.

The areas targeted for expansion are eastern Union County and south of Potts Camp in Marshall County.

New Albany Light, Gas and Water Manager Bill Mattox says the first project likely will be a seven-mile loop along Mississippi Highway 349. It could add 226 customers to the system.

Mattox says some project funding could come from a state grant.
