FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - The far-northern portion of the Dalton Highway is being reopened after recent flooding.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (https://bit.ly/1CpANi0 ) reports Alaska Department of Transportation crews opened a waterlogged 15-mile stretch near Prudhoe Bay on Thursday.

Flooding had made the road impassable for three days.

Trucks use the highway to bring supplies to oilfields, but the blockage essentially brought those deliveries to a halt this week.

The flooding is caused by overflow from the nearby Sagavanirktok River.

Department of Transportation spokeswoman Meadow Bailey says it’s not uncommon to deal with some overflow from the river but this week’s widespread flooding was unprecedented.

Officials say as much as 18 inches of water remains in some areas and commercial vehicles are required to have tire chains to proceed.
