ST. LOUIS (AP) - A postal employee has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor mail desertion charge.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1bWFkmY ) reports that Latonya D. Freechild entered the plea Friday in federal court in St. Louis. Charging documents say she “quit and deserted” 541 pieces of mail that were supposed to be delivered last May in the Jennings area.
A special agent with the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General wrote in an email that all the First-class mail had been returned for delivery. The email said a small portion of the mail was kept as evidence.
The agent said Freechild was a city carrier assistant at the time and that the service had issued a “notice of removal.” Her attorney didn’t immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press.
