WASHINGTON (AP) - Clint Robinson made the Washington Nationals’ opening day roster as a left-handed batter off the bench, beating out Mike Carp for that role.
Carp and left-handed reliever Rich Hill were re-assigned to the minors, manager Matt Williams said Saturday after the Nationals’ 4-3 loss to the New York Yankees in their exhibition finale.
Robinson is a 30-year-old with 13 major league at-bats, including nine with the Dodgers last season. But after signing a minor league deal with Washington in December, he hit .320 in spring training, while Carp batted .200.
Said Robinson, who can play first base or outfield: “You work all offseason, the years in the minor leagues, just to get to this point. Just to be rewarded for having a good spring training means the world to me.”
