SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The spring trout fishing season is opening at streams, lakes and ponds across Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says three new fishing areas are open for rainbow trout fishing beginning Saturday. That brings the total number of sites to 46.

The department stocks the bodies of water where trout fishing is allowed with more than 80,000 rainbow trout each year. The daily catch limit is five trout per angler.

Anglers are required to have a fishing license and an Inland Trout Stamp, unless they are an Illinois resident on leave from active military duty, under age 16, blind or disabled.

The program is funded exclusively through the sale of Inland Trout Stamps.
