SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - A pair of otter births is being celebrated at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse.

The zoo Friday announced the births of two male North American river otter pups, named Monterey and Jack. They were born on March 8 to the zoo’s 6-year-old female otter and its 9-year-old male.

The zoo says the pups weighed about four ounces at birth and are up to about a pound.

They’re being hand-reared by zoo staff members, who made the decision based on the mother’s unsuccessful attempts at rearing offspring in the past. Otter pups are blind for the first four or five weeks of life and require significant care in order to survive.
