WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Competitive eaters are gathering in West Palm Beach for the National Sweet Corn-Eating Championship.

Major League Eating, the governing body that hosts events including the International Hot Dog-Eating Contest every Fourth of July on Coney Island, is sponsoring the Sunday event at Yesteryear Village.

The reigning corn-eating champion, who ate 43 ears of corn last year in 12 minutes, is back to defend his title.

Top-ranked eaters from Las Vegas, Seattle and New York are also competing.

Major League Eating chair George Shea says corn is a particularly tough food for competition because of the stress it puts on jaw muscles.
