TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - About a dozen demonstrators protested a man’s recent death while in police custody at a Toledo hospital.
The demonstrators protesting Sunday outside Toledo’s government center carried posters with messages including “Justice 4 Aaron Pope” and “Black Lives Matter.” Aaron Pope died March 27 after Toledo officers responded to a 911 call saying he was acting out of control.
Rally organizer Michael Leonardi told The Blade (https://bit.ly/1y7HwSM ) in Toledo that the group was protesting what he called a lack of transparency when people are killed by police or die in police custody.
Pope’s relatives say they don’t understand why police didn’t call an ambulance because Pope was foaming at the mouth.
Toledo’s police chief has said officers immediately took Pope to the hospital and a preliminary investigation showed no police wrongdoing.
