HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - An overnight electrical fire that damaged underground cables left thousands without power in Hartford and West Hartford into Easter Sunday.

Eversource reported about 4,000 customers still without power late Sunday afternoon, down from about 13,000 at the height of the problem.

Fire officials said a small explosion and fire hit an underground electrical vault just after midnight at the intersection of Farmington Avenue and Sherman Street. No one was injured.

Churches and restaurants were affected by the disruption.

The Rev. Rhonda Taylor of Hartford’s United Methodist Church tells WFSB-TV her congregation carried on celebrating Easter with extra volunteers. They didn’t have their elevator or organ, but there was plenty of natural sunlight from windows.

Dorjan Puka of West Hartford tells WVIT-TV his Treva restaurant had to close on their second busiest Sunday of the year, cancelling 300 reservations.
