LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A Lake Charles elementary school is teaching parents, too.

J.D. Clifton Elementary School principal Pam Bell says the new Parent Center offers classes in computer, parenting and financial skills.

She tells the American Press (https://bit.ly/1IesH3S ) that more than 70 parents have signed up for those classes, and another 11 have signed up for high-school equivalency classes.

The program’s aimed at helping parents in a high-need area prepare for college, community college, or jobs available in the area.

Bell says the faculty wants to help the parents improve their lives, and want students to see the importance of education.

She said the center was made possible through a grant from Capital One and a partnership with the Literacy Council of Southwest Louisiana.
