MAPLETON, N.D. (AP) - A 106-year-old woman has made a name for herself as the go-to quilt maker in Mapleton.
Myrtle Farrell has been making and selling quilts for decades. She cuts, stitches and assembles baby quilts every day. Each finished quilt also is tagged with her name before it’s sold.
Farrell was born in Fargo when Teddy Roosevelt was president and has lived in Cass County her entire life, babysitting children for most of Mapleton. She got married during the Great Depression.
“Could not afford a dress,” Farrell told WDAY-TV (https://bit.ly/1I81FLn ). “Wore what we had.”
She grew up on a small farm that her parents rented. Her friend, Jean Madsen, surmises that’s why Farrell feels the need to be productive. It’s Farrell’s lifestyle, Madsen said.
“She likes to be busy,” Madsen said.
Farrell estimates she has made 300 quilts in the past three years. She recently started living with her longtime neighbors, where she continues to work on her craft.
