ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York’s new state budget contains $200 million in new funding for municipalities looking to repair or upgrade aging water systems.
State Sen. Carl Marcellino says the $142 billion budget approved by lawmakers early Wednesday will help address a problem that has led to an increasing number of water-main breaks as well as bigger and bigger repair costs for towns and cities.
The grants will be administered through the Environmental Facilities Corp. over the next three years. Individual grants of up to $5 million are available.
With some of the oldest water infrastructure in the nation New York faces repair costs in the coming decades that are expected to reach into the tens of billions of dollars.
