RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A street artist has been commissioned to create a two-story mural depicting South Dakota’s Badlands on a building in downtown Rapid City.
Aaron Pearcy of Box Elder was enlisted by Destination Rapid City to paint the 960-square-foot mural on the north side of the Elks Theatre building, the Rapid City Journal (https://bit.ly/1CZxOle ) reported. The project is expected to cost $15,000 and will be funded by a community innovation award the city received last year.
Pearcy will use a 60-foot commercial lift and countless cans of aerosol spray paint while working on Rapid City’s latest mural. It’ll serve as the backdrop for a sculpture project with a Badlands theme at Main Street Square.
“It’s easily the biggest piece I’ve ever done,” Pearcy said. “But I hope the canvases will keep getting bigger.”
Pearcy is a well-known street artist in Rapid City. He painted a firefighter-themed mural on the patio wall of the Firehouse Brewing Company last year and has contributed artwork to nearby Art Alley.
The new mural will have an image of a movie projector per an agreement with Elks owner Curt Small and Destination Rapid City. But Pearcy isn’t saying much else about what it will look like.
“That’s just something the public’s going to have to wait to see once it’s finished,” Pearcy said.
With his day job at United Blood Services, Pearcy plans to work on his newest creation on weekends in April.
“The biggest challenge is just finding the time when the South Dakota winds won’t be blowing,” Pearcy said.
