Voters to decide whether to create 2 new Georgia cities

ATLANTA (AP) - Voters will decide in November whether to create two new Georgia cities in DeKalb County, just northeast of Atlanta.

In the closing hours of this year’s legislative session on Thursday, the Georgia General Assembly approved what could become Georgia’s newest cities of LaVista Hills and Tucker.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports ( ) that if voters approve the new cities, about 40 square miles of territory would take on greater local control and create distance from the DeKalb County government.

The newspaper reports that in the past decade, seven cities have been created in metro Atlanta. There are now about 70 cities in the Atlanta-area’s 10-core counties.

If voters approve, LaVista Hills would have about 67,446 residents.

Tucker would have a population of about 33,301.
