WASHINGTON (AP) - The Washington Wizards are eying Howard University for a new practice facility.
The Washington Post reports (https://wapo.st/1NM8ReK ) that Wizards owner Ted Leonsis, university officials, and private developers are in talks to build a publicly financed practice facility as part of a mixed-use development.
The deal is in the early stages of discussion, but Howard could provide as much as 2 acres of land for the development.
Leonsis considers a new facility critical to the team’s competitiveness in attracting the best talent. Howard’s president says the facility could bring the school revenue, add amenities and revitalize the northwest Washington neighborhood where it’s located.
If the deal moves forward, the D.C. government would be asked to float bonds to pay for the facility’s construction, which could cost up to $35 million.
