WATERTOWN, S.D. (AP) - Officials in Watertown are planning to mine a city-owned detention pond for gravel.
Acting city engineer Sarah Caron tells The Watertown Public Opinion that the idea of mining the pond came up after gravel was needed for the local community center. She says the pond was previously used as a source of gravel before the city purchased it.
Caron says the removal of gravel will also enhance the pond “by making the hole bigger.” She says the state’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers must clear the project.
Caron says the city will use an alternative source of gravel for the community center, but will pursue mining the pond because the city frequently uses gravel and could tap the source in the future.
