PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Opening statements are due to be delivered in the trial of Maine lobsterman accused of killing another man during a confrontation at a beekeeping business in North Yarmouth.
A jury was selected Friday in the trial of 70-year-old Merrill “Mike” Kimball, and the trial was to get underway Monday.
Police say Kimball shot 63-year-old Leon Kelley multiple times in October 2013 at Brown’s Bee Farm. Kelley’s father-in-law is owner of the business. Kimball’s wife worked there and was retrieving honey before the shooting.
Kimball’s attorney has called the shooting a case of self-defense. Both sides agree that Kelley pushed Kimball before being shot.
Kimball has remained free on $100,000 bail.
