SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Who’s the real hero of the Battle of Saratoga: Benedict Arnold or Horatio Gates?
Two National Park Service rangers will debate that subject in a free program next Saturday at the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs.
During the Battle of Saratoga, American forces defeated the British Army of General John Burgoyne in September and October 1777 and resulted in the French entering the American Revolution on the side of the United States.
Gates was the commander of the American army, but Arnold, his subordinate, was more charismatic and is credited with leading an American charge which was decisive in the second battle at Saratoga on Oct. 7, 1777, also known as the Battle of Bemis Heights.
