LINCOLN, Del. (AP) - The Delaware State Police say troopers have arrested a 21-year-old man from Lincoln after a gun he had been holding discharged and fired a bullet into a house, hitting an adult and a young child.

Troopers say an investigation revealed that Juan Shirey was standing outside with a gun Sunday afternoon when his mother saw him and went to retrieve the gun. Troopers say Shirey began to hand over the weapon when a round discharged and traveled through the exterior wall of a house.

Troopers say the round struck an almost 2-year-old child in the leg and then hit his 24-year-old uncle’s hand. Troopers say Shirey’s mother and three other young children in the home were not injured.

An attempt to reach Shirey by phone for comment was unsuccessful.
