LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Entergy Arkansas has proposed phasing out of its White Bluff coal-fired power plant in response to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed Federal Implementation Plan on Regional Haze.
The EPA plan asks the state’s largest electricity utility to install “scrubbers” - dry flue gas desulfurization technology - at the White Bluff plant in Redfield by 2021. Utility officials say that the cost would have been close to $1 billion on the aging power plant, which would be passed on to customers.
Arkansas Sierra Club officials said in a release Monday that phasing out the White Bluff power plant’s coal operations by 2028 instead will benefit the health of the community. They say the haze plan will protect the Buffalo National River, Ouachita National Forest and Caney Creek Wilderness from pollution.
