SANDY, Utah (AP) - Authorities have identified the man armed with a pellet gun who was shot in the face by an off-duty police officer.

Sandy police say 46-year-old Joby James Romano of Levan, Utah was identified through fingerprints. He remains in critical condition as of Monday morning.

Romano was shot in the cheek Sunday morning by an off-duty Murray police officer who was on his way to work.

Officers were investigating a burglary in Sandy when Romano was found in a bathroom at a public park.

Police say he turned toward the officer with what appeared to be a real handgun after the officer followed him out of the bathroom.

Investigators believe the pellet gun was stolen in the burglary.

Sandy police say there is no video footage from body or dash cameras, as the Murray officer was not yet suited and no other officers were in position for such a recording.
