EAST MANCHESTER, Pa. (AP) - New owner Talen Energy says its Brunner Island power plant in central Pennsylvania will be burning natural gas in addition to coal.

LNP (https://bit.ly/1ElbPCM) reports the Allentown-based company plans to spend $100 million to equip the plant power its three generators by natural gas. The generators produce enough electricity to power about 1 million homes.

Talen spokesman Todd Martin says the plant will continue to burn coal and says he can’t say how often gas will also be used or how much of the plant’s capacity will be fueled by gas or coal once the change is made.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection must approve air quality and other permits before natural gas is added to the 54-year-old plant by the company’s spring 2017 target.
