LOS ANGELES (AP) - The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says the recreational Pacific halibut fishery is closed for the rest of the year.

The department says Thursday’s closure follows projections that the 2015 quota of 25,220 pounds would be exceeded.

The fishery opened May 1 with poor weather limiting fishing, but Fish and Wildlife says excellent ocean conditions in July led to record Pacific halibut catch rates for California, where they commonly range as far south as Point Arena in Mendocino County.
