GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - Prosecutors have determined that Greeley police officers were justified when they killed a man who shot his wife and then pointed a gun at them.
The Weld County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday the officers were cleared in the June 19 shooting of 50-year-old Louis Joseph Atencio “because they reasonably believed it was necessary to defend themselves and others.”
The Greeley Tribune reports (https://goo.gl/Yhsst6 ) police were called after a man found Atencio’s wife, 41-year-old Angelina Abeyta, wounded on his porch. Investigators say that while first responders were treating the woman, Atencio came back to the scene armed with a handgun.
He was shot when he refused to drop the weapon and pointed it at officers.
