CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) - Authorities say a Maryland woman has been charged with assault after she poured hot grits on a sleeping man and then beat him with a baseball bat.

The Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office announced the charges against 42-year-old Alexis Staton of Capitol Heights on Thursday.

Deputies say Staton poured grits on the man while he was sleeping inside her home July 31. When he jumped out of bed, deputies say, Staton hit him in the head with the baseball bat. Deputies say the man suffered burns to his body and left the home with his head bleeding.

Authorities haven’t disclosed a motive for the attack.

Staton was arrested Aug. 4. She is out on bond. Her public defender declined to comment.
