LINWOOD, Mich. (AP) - A ceremony to honor the last Civil War veteran buried in Bay County is planned in Linwood.

The Bay City Times reports ( https://bit.ly/1UEME7R ) that the service Saturday at St. Anne’s Cemetery will honor Phenix Ballard. A new headstone for his gravesite will also be dedicated.

For nearly 75 years, it was believed the last Civil War veteran to be buried in Bay County was Thomas E. Webster, a 92-year old former probate judge. He died in 1940 and is buried in Bay City’s Elm Lawn Cemetery.

But a Bay County historian recently discovered information on Ballard. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1865 and served with the 22nd Michigan Infantry Regiment. He died on Feb. 27, 1942.

The ceremony honoring Ballard will be a re-creation of a Civil War funeral. It will include re-enactors and a musket salute.
