ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An Albuquerque police officer is suing the lieutenant who shot him in a botched undercover drug bust.

An attorney for Jacob Grant, who says he will need medical care for the rest of his life, filed a lawsuit in state District Court this week against Lt. Greg Brachle, Albuquerque police and the city.

In the lawsuit, Grant says Brachle shot him nine times during the January bust outside a McDonald’s.

The documents allege that Brachle continued firing despite pleas from a wounded Grant, who was crawling away from him.

Grant also says Brachle has a history of erratic behavior.

City Attorney Jessica Hernandez says officials take Grant’s claims very seriously but they have a duty to defend themselves against the allegations.

Grant is seeking an unknown amount of punitive damages.
