BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - A Southeast Texas woman could receive life in prison for battering her newborn daughter in 2013 and leaving the baby with about 40 broken bones.

Christine Johnson of Port Arthur faces the penalty phase Monday.

Jurors in Beaumont on Friday convicted the 22-year-old Johnson of reckless injury to a child and knowingly by omission causing injury to a child.

Prosecutors say Faith Mason suffered her first fractures when she was just two weeks old. The youngster remains in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Johnson last week rejected a plea deal that could have left her facing a 35-year prison term.
