Texas troopers part of border-to-border safety initiative

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas troopers are part of a border-to-border highway safety initiative targeting Interstate 35 to promote safe driving.

The Texas Department of Safety effort runs through Sunday. DPS says 16-states are taking part in the safety push, which began Friday, that also includes Interstate 80.

The I-80/I-35 Border-to-Border Traffic Safety Initiative coincides with the Texas enhanced DWI enforcement period through Labor Day. That DPS effort began Aug. 21.

I-35 runs from Texas to Minnesota. I-80 spans California to New Jersey.

The Texas Department of Transportation recorded 127 fatalities last year on the state’s portion of I-35.
