WALHALLA, S.C. (AP) - Oconee County authorities accuse a 38-year-old woman of trying to kill a relative by putting several plastic bags over her head.

The sheriff’s office said in a release Saturday that April Townsend of West Union is charged with attempted murder. Deputies who responded to a home Friday afternoon said they found the victim on the floor. She was not breathing and had no pulse.

An arrest warrant accuses Townsend of holding down the victim and restricting her airflow until she was unconscious.

Deputies say Townsend told them she had to “release the demons” and that she was the “higher power.”

An officer revived the victim using CPR. She was taken to a hospital.

Townsend remained Saturday in the Oconee County jail. It was unclear if she had an attorney.
