HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) - A southwest Ohio county has its first four-signal traffic light that features a flashing yellow arrow for left hand turns.

The Hamilton-Middletown Journal-News (https://bit.ly/1MLigWw ) reports Butler County’s first left-turn signals with four-arrow displays are now operational.

The new flashing yellow arrow indicates that drivers are allowed to turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians versus a steady yellow arrow which means that the left turn signal is about to turn red and drivers should prepare to stop. Other displays on the signal are steady green, yellow and red arrows.

The traffic lights have been in use in other parts of Ohio in other states for several years in an effort to improve safety.

Officials say the county plans to install more in the near future.
