A 12-year-old Florida girl is in recovery after her father accidentally shot her in the arm while teaching her about gun safety Sunday night.

Davie police Sgt. Pablo Castaneda said Monday that the girl suffered non-life threatening injuries to her left forearm and is expected to make a full recovery, the New York Daily News reported.

The accident occurred inside their home as the girl’s father was teaching her how to draw a gun from his pocket, Sgt. Castaneda said.

Police are not releasing the identities of the family members, and the state’s Child Protective Services are investigating the matter, he said.

No arrests were made. It was unclear if the father could face charges.

A neighbor said she saw the victim being led out of the house.

“The little girl came out, her arm was wrapped, and her whole side of her outfit was full of blood,” Kara Perez told a local Fox affiliate.

Onlookers who saw the aftermath said the outcome could have been worse.

“That bullet could have gone through the wall; it could have come down here and hit us, for all we know, so it’s very scary,” area resident Cindy Barns told the station.

A neighbor said the father was a former Marine, which Sgt. Castaneda could not confirm.
