YUMA, Ariz. (AP) - Yuma is appealing the revocation of the city clerk’s notary seal by the Secretary of State’s office, saying the move is an overreaction to an unintentional error.

The appeal filed by the city Wednesday asks for a stay of the revocation of City Clerk Lynda Bushong’s notary powers.

Bushong notarized the oaths of office for two city council members in December 2011 using a stamp that showed her commission expired in 2016. Other documents stamped at the same time showed a 2012 expiration. The city says the mistake happened when Bushong was renewing her notary commission.

It’s illegal to have two notary stamps at once.

Secretary of State’s office spokesman Matt Roberts says Bushong has asked for an informal settlement conference and can appeal its results to a judge.
