PEKIN, Ill. (AP) - A former clerk in the small Tazewell County village of Hopedale has pleaded guilty to embezzlement - 20 years after her predecessor was convicted of the same crime.
The Pekin Daily Times reports (https://bit.ly/1Dy0MeV ) that 65-year-old Paula Gregory pleaded guilty on Friday to stealing almost $12,000 from the village by pocketing cash payments made by residents on water and sewer bills.
She was sentenced to 30 months of probation and ordered to repay the money.
The newspaper says Gregory received almost the same sentence as former village Clerk Deborah Schertz did 20 years ago.
Gregory in 1995 replaced Schertz, who was convicted of official misconduct for stealing.
An investigation into Gregory’s conduct began last November when a village bookkeeper discovered missing cash payments to the village’s bank account.
