ARDMORE, Okla. (AP) - The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says an Ardmore man has died after being shot by an Ardmore police officer.

The OSBI says the man had also ingested a poison before police arrived and later shot him. A cause of death was not released.

The dead man is identified as 41-year-old Eric Thompkins.

The OSBI says police were called to a home in Ardmore by a Thompkins’ mother, who said her son was suicidal. The agency says officers found Thompkins outside the home and that he was shot when he pulled what appeared to be a gun from his pocket.

The officer’s name was not released.

The OSBI is investigating the shooting and will provide a report to the district attorney, who will determine if the shooting was justified.
