NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says a new jobs program for prisoners at the New Haven Correctional Center will be the first of its kind in the state and one of only a dozen in the country.

Malloy announced on Wednesday that an American Job Center will open at the jail early next year. The goal for the 18-month project is to serve 175 prisoners and help them avoid committing more crimes by teaching them how to apply and interview for jobs, and referring them to available jobs.

The job center will be one of 12 in the nation funded by a federal initiative aimed at reintegrating offenders back into communities.

It will be run by the nonprofit Workforce Alliance, which provides job opportunities and training skills across southern Connecticut.
