PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state arts council has awarded grants to support arts education, community projects by organizations and artist fellowships and projects.

The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts says it’s awarding 75 grants to local schools, organizations, community centers and artists for their projects for the rest of the fiscal year.

The council’s board approved a total of $142,998 in grants at its December meeting.

Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo says the grants support the great work artists and arts educators are doing to support the economy and add to the state’s cultural vitality.

This year, the council has awarded 262 grants totaling nearly $1.5 million to nonprofits, schools, artists and community groups.

The state’s General Assembly and the federal National Endowment for the Arts allocated the funding to the council.
