MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - Mason City police are warning residents and business owners of a phone call scam in which someone is pretending to be with a utility company.
The city’s police department says it’s received a report of a caller posing as a representative with Alliant Energy.
The impostor told a local business on Monday that its account was delinquent. The caller wanted the business to buy a pre-paid credit card and provide its information over the phone.
The Mason City Globe Gazette (https://bit.ly/1M8ZNm7 ) reports Alliant Energy doesn’t ask customers to purchase prepaid credit cards.
Anyone receiving a similar call is asked to contact authorities.
