TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Supreme Court agreed the landlord of a Broward County apartment complex where two people were slain should pay the victims’ family $1.8 million because it failed to fix a security gate.

The Supreme Court issued its ruling Thursday, reversing an appeals court decision and upholding the original jury award.

The case involves the 2005 killings of 20-year-old Ciara Sanders and her 17-year-old brother Chauncey Sanders. They were fatally shot in the apartment where they had lived for about a year.

Relatives sued the owner of the Gatehouse on the Green apartments in Plantation, saying they promised to provide security yet let an entrance gate go unrepaired for months.

The Supreme Court agreed in a 5-2 opinion, rejecting the argument from the apartment complex owners that they weren’t responsible.
