PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Thieves and other crooks owe Rhode Island’s court system tens of millions of dollars in fines and fees dating back decades.

WJAR-TV reported Thursday (https://bit.ly/1CkSPVw ) that the delinquent Superior Court fines and fees total $53 million.

The station also reports that 61 percent of people who bailed out of jail recently didn’t have cash for their court fines and fees. Some of those fines and fees were as little as $4, but most people owed hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Court spokesman Craig Berke says everyone who owes court fines and fees either has a court date or a warrant out for them.

About 140 people who owe back court fines and fees appeared in a state courtroom on a recent day. Most said they were unemployed.
