SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Senate has confirmed Gov. Gary Herbert’s pick for the state Supreme Court: state Judge Constandinos Himonas.

The Senate voted unanimously Friday to approve Himonas for the state’s highest court.

Himonas has spent a decade as a judge in Utah’s 3rd District covering Salt Lake, Tooele and Summit Counties. He will replace Associate Chief Justice Ronald Nehring, who is retiring after about 11 years on the high court.

Nehring, a Lutheran, is the only non-Mormon justice on the five-member court. Himonas, who is Greek-Orthodox, will continue that distinction.

Herbert says in a statement that he’s pleased the Senate confirmed Himonas, who he believes will serve integrity and intelligence.
