VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) - Valdosta city officials say rags and grease in a private sewer system are suspected as factors in a roughly 375-gallon wastewater overflow into a local waterway.

City officials said in a statement that crews responding to a customer complaint Monday saw that a manhole was overflowing and wastewater was running into a tributary that feeds the Dukes Bay Canal. Officials say the private sewer system was discharging into the city’s sewer main and caused the overflow.

Officials say the spill is the second linked to the same property owner within two years. Officials say the owner has been notified and a third spill will lead to court action.

City officials say crews cleaned the affected area and notified the Environmental Protection Division and the local health department.
