CONWAY, S.C. (AP) - The old South Carolina tobacco town of Conway had rejected a citywide ban on smoking.

Local media outlets report that city council on Monday rejected the ban. For decades tobacco auctions were held in Conway, about a dozen miles from Myrtle Beach.

The proposal would have eliminated smoking in nearly all private businesses in the city. Instead, council is opting for a more limited ban that prohibits smoking in parks, recreation areas and in city vehicles.

Opponents of the citywide ban say it’s not really necessary because most businesses in Conway already ban smoking.
