DOVER, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell’s request for more state money to continue Race to the Top education reform efforts isn’t sitting well with some Delaware lawmakers.
Education secretary Mark Murphy asked members of the legislature’s Joint Finance Committee on Wednesday for $7.5 million in new spending for Race to the Top initiatives.
But lawmakers expressed little interest in using state funds to continue Race to The Top, with committee co-chair Sen. Harris McDowell III expressing concerns about creating a new permanent bureaucracy.
Delaware received more than $100 million in federal funding for the four-year Race to the Top program after being one of the first two states selected for the federal program in 2010.
Markell administration officials now want to continue some of the reform efforts with state taxpayer money.
